This is a live solo piano recording of performances in five cities during a solo piano concert tour in Japan in November 1976, and was released in 1978 as a 10-LP set, one of the largest set formats in the label's history. The engineer in charge of the recording at that time was Mr. Okihiko Kanno, a well-known audio critic. Incidentally, the title of this album came about during a conversation between Keith Jarrett, Manfred Eicher, and Mr. Kanno (a literal translation of the English words "hi" (hi, yang) and "kuma" (bear) for the brown bear that lives in Hokkaido).

The contents of the LP set was a 10-LP set containing performances on all five dates (Kyoto (November 5), Osaka (November 8), Nagoya (November 12), Tokyo (November 14), and Sapporo (November 18)) in five sets of two LPs each (four sides), but when it was first released on CD in 1990, each performance was recorded on one CD of five The set is now a 6-CD set, including 5 CDs of 2 minutes each, plus disc 6 containing the encores from Sapporo, Tokyo, and Nagoya. This legendary recording by Okihiko Kanno is a must for audiophiles.
