James Gilchrist is also widely active as a specialist in modern British songs such as Britten, Finzi, and Vaughan Williams. New Recordings at Chandos was born in Sussex in 1877 and studied at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt with Grainger, Cyril Scott, and Henry Balfour Gardiner, a composer best known for his contributions to English art song, Roger Quilter's song cycle. Approximately 150 songs were composed by Quilter, many of which are still popular favorites in his regular recitals. On this album, James Gilchrist and pianist Anna Tilbrook, who has performed with Quilter for many years in Britten, Schumann, and Vaughan Williams song cycles, will perform a selection of his early works, including "Now sleeps the crimson peta" and "The Ash Grove. to later works such as "The Ash Grove," exploring the wide range of Quilter's art. With the exception of "Four Songs of Mirza Shafi" with a German text by Friedrich von Bodenstedt, all songs have English lyrics, weaving an attractive program grouped by theme, such as "Shakespeare," "Flowers," "Folk Songs" and "Love Songs.
