Collins has enjoyed a remarkable career as a conductor—leading the City of London Sinfonia, where he served as principal conductor from 2010 to 2018, as well as the Philharmonia, the ASMF, the Ulster Orchestra, and the Hyogo Arts and Culture Center Orchestra—but his work as a soloist continues to thrive! “Lyrical Clarinet” is a program that fully showcases Michael Collins’ warm, beautiful clarinet tone and deep artistic sensibility. This third installment, released for the first time in about four years, is a collection of gems centered on arrangements of solo piano pieces and works for violin and piano. “Clair de Lune,” “The Girl with Flaxen Hair,” “After the Dream,” “Träumerei,” “The Swan,” “The Sorrow of Love,” and “Liebestraum No. 3”—this rich album features a lineup of timeless classics beloved across generations and genres, culminating in a clarinet arrangement of Franck’s “Violin Sonata,” a masterpiece of the Romantic sonata. The only original work for clarinet and piano on the album is Gobeil’s “Fantasy”; Franck’s Violin Sonata is arranged by Michael Collins, and all other works are arranged by Michael McHale.
