Description:

An urgent release in memory of Nikolaus ArnoncourtArnoncourt, who passed away on March 5, 2016 at the age of 86, had been eagerly awaiting the release of Beethoven's "Missa Solemnis," which he considered to be the culmination of his musical life. In addition to "Missa Solemnis," two other performances were scheduled for the 2015 Stiliarte Festival, but Arnoncourt cancelled one of them due to health problems and went to the three performances of "Missa Solemnis" with full preparation (July 4-6). The performances, featuring the Concentus and the A. Schoenberg Choir with their hand-picked singers, were broadcast live on TV by the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation and attracted a great deal of attention. On July 22, Arnoncourt appeared at the Salzburg Festival where he conducted the "Missa Solemnis" again with the same members except for the mezzo-soprano, and this was the last performance of Arnoncourt's life. This was the last performance of Arnoncourt's lifetime. In this sense, this performance of "Missa solemnis" can be regarded as the culmination of more than 60 years of Arnoncourt's musical career. Arnoncourt first performed "Missa Solemnis" in 1988 with the Hague Philharmonic Orchestra at the Hohenems Schubert Festival in Feldkirch, and in 1992 at the opening concert of the Salzburg Festival (which was also his official debut at the festival). The recording was also made by Teldec in 1992 (Chamber Orchestra of Europe). The work was subsequently performed by Arnoncourt in 1998 on a European tour with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and in 2012 with the Concertgebouw Orchestra (the entire performance was recorded on video and made available on video software), indicating that the work was extremely important to him. This performance of "Missa Solemnis" was the first time that Arnoncourt performed the work with his hand-picked Concentus, and it is a special performance that can truly be considered the end point of his lifelong pursuit of the art of music. After announcing his retirement, Arnoncourt devoted himself to the completion of "Missa Solemnis," which could be called his musical testament, and listened to and checked all the recorded material, including rehearsals. Martin Sauer of Teldex Studios, a long-time Arnoncourt recording studio, remixed and edited the master to complete the project. This is a long recording, 81 minutes and 30 seconds long, on one disc.
