Along with Rossini and Bellini, Donizetti was the leading composer of Italian opera in the first half of the 19th century. He left numerous works in both opera seria and buffa for theaters in Naples, Milan, and Venice. In addition to his operas, he also left behind an English horn concerto and numerous string quartets, but his operas have been so dominant that his instrumental works are not often performed. Donizetti's symphonies, of which more than 10 remain, are interesting works that are close to the sinfonia form of the operatic overtures, with all manner of Donizetti style attempts at thematic relevance and masterful technique. Diego Dini Ciacci, longtime principal oboe of La Scala Orchestra in Milan, sheds light on these works and explores another side of Donizetti with sweet melodies and lively tempos that sing. Sony Music
