After studying at the Royal Ballet Lower and Upper Schools, London-born ballerina Darcey Bussell joined Sadler's Royal Ballet in 1987 and moved to the Royal Ballet the following year. There, she was promoted to principal just one year later, in 1989, at the young age of 20, after being selected by Kenneth MacMillan for a major role in the company. He played many leading roles and won critical acclaim. This album features music from her first leading role with the Royal Ballet, Britten's "Prince Bacoda," as well as other famous ballet scenes in which she has played leading roles. Darcey Bussell has also been announced as a judge on the BBC's popular dance program "Strictly Come Dancing" starting in the fall of 2015, and is by far the most popular ballerina in the UK. This compilation of ballet music selected by her is highly recommended for ballet students.The performances are based on the famous recording (originally released on the Conifer label) of the orchestra of the Royal Opera, Bussell's home, conducted by maestro Elmlel, as well as a selection of Sony Classical's own proven recordings by Fiedler, Ormandy, Salonen, Tilson Thomas, and others.
