Following Kamasi Washington and Shabaka Hutchings from the new generation of UK jazz scene that has been rising in the last few years, the long-awaited debut album by Nubaiya Garcia, the much talked about saxophonist/composer who has been receiving continuous praise from various media, is finally here! Produced by Garcia himself and popular producer Kwes. (Nerija, Bobby Womack, Solange) This album follows his 2018 self-released EP WHEN WE ARE, the title track of which was described by the New York Times as "Exciting! Exciting!" and was named one of NPR's "Best Songs of 2018." 2017's debut EP, NUBYA's 5IVE, was hailed as "off the charts" by The Vinyl Factory and sold out on vinyl in less than 24 hours. 2018 also saw the release of a new EP, London's young and Garcia was also featured on five of the nine tracks on WE OUT HERE, a Brownswood compilation project celebrating the exciting jazz scene.She is the recipient of the Jazz FM Breakthrough Act of the Year Award and Sky Arts Breakthrough Act of the Year Award in 2018 and the Jazz FM UK Jazz Act of the Year Award in 2019 for her A deeply personal work that maps identity, family history, grief, Afro-diasporic connections, and collectivist coordinate points, SOURCE is "basically about being grounded within yourself and being able to exist with others. It is the realization of personal and collective power," he comments. In other words, it is about the saxophonist reconnecting with himself, his roots, and his community, and the evolution of his values. The album draws inspiration from the many places Garcia calls home, from London to Bogota, from Cowra to Georgetown.Garcia's erudite blend of breakbeats, soul, dubstep, Afro-diasporic sounds, cumbia to calypso expands on this album, but never loses its deep jazz foundation; Flying Lotus, Calypso Rose, Mala, and Nidia Gongora, as well as drawing much inspiration from Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. SOURCE is an album about our radical and relentless belief in our ability to overcome the individual and collective challenges we face now and those we will face in the future. The album also features three members of Kokoroko, the same jazz band that is fueling the jazz movement by the new UK generation, La Perla, a multi-instrumental trio from Colombia, and Akenya, a singer from Chicago.
