The German violinist Carl Zuske (1934-88) spent five years from 1983 to 1988 to complete Bach's complete works for unaccompanied violin. This was a period of transition from analog to digital recording, with the first unaccompanied violin sonata and the first partita recorded in analog in 1983, and the second and third unaccompanied violin sonatas and the second and third partitas recorded digitally from 1985 to 1988. All recordings were made at the Luke Church in Dresden, where Eterna made many famous recordings, and all recordings were mastered to CD format with stable sound quality. The SACD versions of these recordings are notable for the remarkable improvement in sound quality in both analog and digital formats, creating a unified sound quality at the highest quality level. Zuske was concertmaster of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig for a quarter of a century, performing orchestral repertoire from baroque to contemporary music, as well as solo violin in Bach's vocal and chamber works.
