Description:

Coupling one of Carl Zuske's most famous recordings, Beethoven's Violin Concerto and Mendelssohn's Octet. This is one of the best recordings of the essence of Zuske as a soloist and chamber musician. World's first SACD release! The 37th release of the SACD hybridization project. This is the 37th release in the SACD Hybridization Project, which combines the best of German violinist Carl Zuske (1934-) as a soloist and chamber musician. The SACD version of the two recordings is noteworthy in that the high frequencies have been extended and the sound has been cleaned up, the low frequencies have become more profound and the center of gravity has been lowered, and the sound quality has been improved to an unmistakable degree. Beethoven's Violin Concerto was recorded in September 1987. The venue, the New Gewandhaus, is said to be the most successful concert hall in terms of acoustics due to its wineyard shape, and the orchestra's fluffy, feather-light sound in the opening section was mesmerizing. Then came the soloists. Zuske's beautiful, lustrous tone, fluent phrasing, and light rhythmic sense allowed her to portray the famous melody of this work with exquisite intonation. The fact that he sings the melody with such sweetness while never going beyond the rules and never losing his elegant demeanor attests to his high musical taste. Another beauty is that, despite the use of modern instruments and techniques, the silky lines, restrained vibrato, and neat sense of formality give the music a refreshingly classical feel. The Mendelssohn Octet was recorded in September 1985. The venue here is the famous Luke Church in Dresden, which was used by Eterna as a recording studio. Compared to Beethoven, which makes use of the resonance of the entire hall, this Mendelssohn is closer to the microphones and the instruments, giving it a more vivid feel. The performance is a collaboration between the 200-year-old Gewandhaus String Quartet, of which Zuske has been the leader since 1977, and the Berlin String Quartet, which Zuske founded in 1965 and was the leader until 1977. As both quartets were led by Zuske, the tone, phrasing, and ensemble are in perfect unison, and the musical interpretation is a mixed bag. In addition, the Gewandhaus String Quartet was active even before the composer Mendelssohn's time as Gewandhaus Kapellmeister, making it the most authentic quartet in terms of Mendelssohn performance. This tradition, combined with the neoclassical musical views of Zuske, who lived in the latter half of the 20th century, and the functional and fluid ensemble of both quartets, makes the music neat, noble, fresh, and lively.
