Description:
The German conductor Gerd Schaller, born in Bamberg, presents No. 6 in the Bruckner symphony series promoted by the German conductor Gerd Schaller. This is a live recording of a concert he conducted with the Philharmonie Festiva Handel at the Abbey Church of Ebraha in August 2013, the month after No. 5 was performed. The series has attracted attention for including numbers based on the editions of William Callaghan, an American musicologist and leading Bruckner scholar, and now with No. 6, the nine numbered works normally considered the complete works are available. Sandwiched between the mid-period masterpiece No. 5 and the three late pieces, No. 6 has an irresistible charm in the first movement, which begins with a rugged, martial theme, and the contrasting, sorrowful second movement, which makes one wonder why Bruckner's leading performer, Wandt, often featured this work in his performances.The Sixth Symphony is an exception in that it has not been revised by the composer, and there is no mention of the use of the Carragán score, but given the excellent results of the series, it should be welcomed with great anticipation by Bruckner lovers.
