Olesya Petrova Kozlovsky, Osip (1757-1831)

Description:

Emotions comparable to Mozart's masterpieces! The soulful cries of a Polish composer active in Russia Juszef Kozlowski (1757-1831) was a Polish composer, one year younger than Mozart. At the age of 23, he moved to Russia to serve as an officer in the Russo-Turkish War, after which he became a court musician and composed operas and dances. He popularized polonaise at the Russian court and was even quoted in Tchaikovsky's opera "The Queen of Spades. The Requiem was commissioned by Stanisław August Poniatowski, the last king of the Polish-Lithuanian Confederation, who was living in Russia, for his own funeral, and was used in 1798. It is said to have been a requiem for Kozłowski's homeland, as Poland disappeared from the map in 1795 when Russia, Germany, and Austria divided the country into three separate states. It was performed again in 1825 at the funeral of Tsar Alexander I of Russia. The requiem is a Catholic requiem and is not used by the Russian Orthodox Church, but it is believed that this was because Aleksandr I was also the King of Poland. Kozłowski added a few more songs, increasing the drama by thickening the orchestration and the chorus. This is the version we have today.Hans Selensen, Artistic Director of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, heard this version on CD in 2018 and wanted to perform it with his organization. He finally obtained the score, but was unable to perform it due to a pandemic, and the conductor Vedernikov, who was originally scheduled to conduct it, passed away suddenly in 2020 due to complications from corona. When the time finally came for the concert to be realized, Hans Graf, who was to conduct the concert, carefully restored the original manuscript. This work, composed seven years after Mozart's masterpiece, is in the style of the Viennese classics, but with a Slavic flavor, and the transience of the final work, which fades into nothingness, is a thought-provoking piece.
