Description:

Minkowski returns with a recording of Handel's opera! Alcina" by Kozena, Morley, Bonitatibus and other splendid singers! Handel's "Alcina," an opera first performed in 1735, is based on Ludovico Ariosto's "The Mad Orlando," a work in the so-called "magic opera" genre. The story is about Ruggiero, a knight who is enchanted by the witch Alcina and trapped on her island, and his lover Bradamante, who rescues him with his friends. Handel's cast of Italian singers, including castrato star Giovanni Calestini and top soprano Anna Maria Strada, both of whom were very popular in England at the time, were accompanied in the leading roles by soprano Cecilia Young and 15-year-old boy singer William Savage, both of whom would become indispensable in Handel's later productions. The production also included important roles for up-and-coming British singers such as soprano Cecilia Young and William Savage, a 15-year-old boy who would become an indispensable part of Handel's later works. In this opera, Handel did not portray Alcina as a mere villainous witch, but rather as a human being who stirs the emotions of the audience and inspires sympathy. The play has been performed many times since its premiere. Alcina" was to be Handel's last hit opera. Handel's works have been a major part of Minkowski's repertoire, and he has recorded not only his major works such as "Messiah" and "Water Music," but also his operas for the ERATO and ARCHIV labels, almost all of which were well received and highly praised. However, recently he has been away from recordings. This "Alcina" is Minkowski's first session recording of a Handel opera in a long time, and it is his first full-length session recording of the opera, which he has performed in the past.
