Patrick Ayrton, a British musician who studied with Ton Koopman at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague and is now active as a harpsichordist, organist and conductor, has arranged for harpsichord a number of jazz-style and 20th century pieces written for piano. Arrangements! The sound of the harpsichord is a perfect match for the jazz style and masterpieces of the 20th century that Ayrton has created using his technique. The program is a combination of light, bright, and sometimes shadowy works. The last piece on the program is Joseph Horowitz's (1926-) "Jazz Harpsichord Concerto. This concerto, born of an attempt to fuse baroque structures with modern swing textures, is a masterpiece of the 20th century that interweaves Vivaldi's sonata and concerto forms with Gershwin's harmonies. Moreover, since the available performances of the work are currently very limited, the appearance of this new recording is sure to attract a great deal of attention.A timeless array of sounds created by the harpsichord and 20th century music.
