Busoni's (1866-1924) lifetime opera "Dr. Faust" is known as one of the most singular operas of the 20th century. It is not Goethe's well-known play, but one that he himself created from a libretto, seeking lyrics from a variety of sources over a period of almost two decades. However, it was left unfinished when the composer died in 1924 and was completed by his pupil Jarnach the following year. This 1959 recording, an abridged version by Fischer-Dieskau and Sir Adrian Boult, is a record of the world premiere of the piece. The booklet by John Amis, the first BBC broadcaster to broadcast the piece, contains his own tributes and reflections on the performers, and the broadcast notes from the time of the recording also provide a deep insight into the work.
