"ASweetPasserby," the long-awaited second album from Orange County/LA-based artist kelz, blends the euphoria of ’90s and Y2K pop with the pain of loss and self-acceptance. Blending nostalgic synthscapes with whispered lyrics, the album depicts a bittersweet journey toward self-acceptance and peace. The 11 tracks, written over the past four years, form an introspective self-portrait of a person whose identity wavers amid the death of a family member, periods of depression, and memories of simpler times—all while superficially going about daily life. Highlights include “SweetEscape,” written during the final week spent with her late grandmother; “FallingBehind,” which quietly distills the loneliness of self-paralysis and loss; the lead track “JustUs2,” with its summery euphoria of choosing her own happiness for the first time; “Breathe,” which explores being kind to oneself; and the closing track “I’mSorry,” which concludes with the realization that “answers don’t come all at once.” "answers don’t come all at once"—not hope. The melancholic guitar production strikes a perfect balance between melancholy and a sense of floating, marking a step toward maturity.
