A new work by Carl Davis! A ballet commissioned by the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre based on a masterpiece of American literature. The Great Gatsby," American author F. Scott Fitzgerald's masterpiece, was published in 1925. Around the same time, Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," a masterpiece incorporating classical music and jazz elements, was composed. Jazz was very popular in the U.S. at the time, and the American culture of the 1920s is called the "Jazz Age," derived from Fitzgerald's "A Tale of the Jazz Age. Two works that embody the American culture of the time were born during that period. In 2019, many years after the two works came out, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre is adapting the novels into a ballet. Carl Davis was chosen to compose the music. Carl Davis has been familiar with these two works since he was a child.When he composed "The Great Gatsby," he wanted to incorporate elements of Broadway musicals. True to his words, the entire piece is full of catchy and accessible music.
