Harry Christophers and The Sixteen, who continue their great passion for commissioning and premiering contemporary works, have made the first recording of Scottish leading composer James MacMillan's new work "Stabat Mater" with Britten Sinfonia! Stabat Mater (Our Lady of Sorrows), a Catholic hymn to the Virgin, has been the subject of compositions by such great composers as Palestrina, Vivaldi, Pergolesi, Dvorak, Rossini, Poulenc, and Pärt, among many others. In October 2016, MacMillan, who is himself a devout Catholic, faced this grand theme and constructed the relationship between "poetry" and "music" with an approach different from that of previous composers. The world premiere of the piece, performed by the same combination of Christophers, The Sixteen, and Britten Sinfonia at the Barbican in London in October 2016, also received rave reviews.
