Description:
Three Hindemith orchestral works by Marek Janowski and the WDR Symphony Orchestra of Cologne! Marek Janowski and the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne have recorded three of Hindemith's orchestral works. Janowski's German works are highly acclaimed, especially Henze and Hindemith, which represent 20th century Germany, and are well suited to Janowski's hard-edged musical style. Hindemith taught composition at the Higher School of Music in Berlin from 1927, but was forced by the Nazis to leave in 1934 because his atonal style and other modern tendencies were considered corrupt art, and he moved to Switzerland in 1938. He moved to Switzerland in 1938, and then to the U.S. from 1940-47 to avoid the war. The works on this album were composed during these turbulent years. Symphonic Variations on a Theme by Weber takes the form of four free variations on a theme from Weber's incidental music Turandot, Op.75, Eight Pieces, Op.60, and Six Gentle Pieces, Op.10. The suite "Noble Fantasy" is an adaptation of the ballet music of the same name, whose theme is the religious awakening of St. Francis of Assisi, into a suite of three pieces. The Concerto for Strings and Brass was commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra for its 50th anniversary.The brass is very thick with four horns, four trumpets, three trombones, and one tuba, and the exquisite interplay between strings and brass is an attractive feature of this work. Janowski's stoic music-making and exquisite volume balance are also outstanding in this recording. King International
