Description:

New Philippe Graffant Recording! Newly Discovered Ysaÿe Violin Concertos! French virtuoso Philippe Graffant's new Avie recording is the world premiere recording of two violin concerto-like works by the renowned Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe. Graffan studied with Josef Gingold, a pupil of Ysaÿe. After winning the Fritz Kreisler Competition in Austria, he made his first recording under the direction of Menuhin and has established a particularly strong reputation in the French repertoire. In 2018, he was appointed professor at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris and the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, and in 2017, Ysaÿe founded and became artistic director of the "Ysaye'sKnokke" International Music Festival in Knokke, the Belgian summer resort where Ysaye spent time. The first movement of Ysaye's Violin Concerto on this album was recently discovered, followed by the discovery of further manuscripts necessary to complete the work. Working closely with Ysaÿe aficionado Xavier Foulkes, Graffan analyzed page by page and painstakingly reconstructed the pieces of the musical puzzle. The result is a recording project of the complete concerto in three movements that displays Ysaÿe's trademark enthusiasm, intensity, and originality. The other first recording, the Concerto Poème Concertante, was also recently discovered in manuscript form, and is imbued with the passion and affection that Ysaÿe felt for his student Irma Sethe. This work remained undiscovered for over a century, but has been beautifully restored in this world premiere recording. In addition to these first recordings, Graffan also presents the "Two Mazurkas," which Ysaÿe performed frequently during his lifetime and which became popular throughout Europe. The other three pieces on this disc are three gems for violin and piano: "A Child's Dream," dedicated to his youngest son Antoine, "The Dream of a Child," and "The Dream of a Child" for piano. Graffan, who has pioneered and recorded many unknown works and rare repertoire such as rare, first-draft, and arranged versions, has discovered a new fascination for Ysaÿe's works in this remarkable disc.
