The ultimate in enrichment! Gergiev's quintessential Russian "Petrushka" Stravinsky's "Petrushka" by Gergiev & Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra is finally available on SACD hybrid disc. Gergiev and the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra have performed all three of Stravinsky's ballets in Japan, so it would seem that a disc exists, but the only recordings of "The Rite of Spring" and "The Firebird" are from the last century and "Petrushka" is with the World Orchestra for Peace. The performance with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra is finally included in the catalog. The "Petrushka" was premiered in Paris, and the purely French performance by Lotto and others is attractive, but Gergiev insists on the original 1911 version as the only Russian music. The four-winds of the large orchestra also push forward with great leadership. This is the most dynamic "Petrushka" I have heard in a long time. The frightening expressions in the latter half are also divine. The coupling piece is "Karuta Play," written in 1937 during Stravinsky's neoclassical period, and Gergiev's interpretation is a delightful one, with his finger on the pulse of what makes it so special.You will find a taste that is very different from the preconceived notion of dry neoclassicism, and not far from Petrushka and others.
