Sinopoli's "Parsifal" at Bayreuth is now available on Blu-ray Disc with Japanese subtitles! This Parsifal is the most important recording of Giuseppe Sinopoli (1946-2001), who was the mainstay conductor at Bayreuth from 1985 to 2000, the year before his sudden death. The slow tempo of this recording allows the conductor to slowly depict the magnificent music of Wagner's later years, yet the sound is clear and lucid. Once again, we are reminded that Wagner was a great Wagner. The cast is also well rounded. Parsifal is played by Paul Elming, the leading actor in this role in the 1990s. Despite his success, there are not many recordings, let alone images, of him, so Parsifal in his prime is a rare find. It is the strong nucleus of the entire production. Kundry's Linda Watson was making her Bayreuth debut.Over the next 10 years, he appeared annually at Bayreuth, most notably singing Brünnhilde from 2006-2010, where he established an unshakeable reputation. The Bayreuth Festival at this time was very rich in male low voices, with Hans Zotin in Grunemannz, Faruk Struckmann in Amfortas, Ekkehard Vlasich in Klingzor, and Matthias Herre in Titurel, all top-notch singers. Wolfgang Wagner's first production since 1989 has been nothing short of stable. Thankfully, the Blu-ray Disc includes Japanese subtitles.
