This video of Berlioz's (1803-1869) "Symphonie fantastique" shows the good relationship between the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Haitink. Haitink was the principal conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (then known as the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra) from 1961 to 1988, and gave a series of excellent performances, including Mahler's complete symphonies. Even with Mahler, his performances were considered "lacking in individuality" compared to the high-impact performances of Bernstein, Scholte, and others. However, as you know, his reputation has changed over the years as more and more people have had the opportunity to hear live performances and demonstrations, and it has become widely known that he is in fact a passionate conductor with ups and downs.This Berlioz is another "hot performance" in which such fervor of Haitink's can be felt. Berlioz's distorted love theme persists to the end of the piece, weaving through the brilliant orchestral sound, sometimes straight, sometimes with loud laughter.
