A collection of works for viola da gamba by Dietrich Steffken, who was active throughout Europe as a gamba player and composer. German cellist Dietmar Berger studied at the Aachen and Düsseldorf Universities of Music, and then at the Leipzig University of Music, where he learned viola da gamba technique from Sebastian Pank, becoming proficient on both cello and gamba, modern and period. He was a member of the Saxon State Opera in Dresden from 1993 to 2000 and is currently based in Cologne, where he is very active as a cellist and viola da gamba player. Berger is also active as an editor and composer at the Friedrich Hofmeister Music Publishers in Leipzig and the Dor Music Publishers in Bergheim. In this album, he plays three different types of gambas with great skill, conveying the charm of Steffken's still mysterious works. Tokyo M-Plus
