The fame of Italian composer and music theorist Giambattista Martini (Giovanni Battista Martini) is largely due to his constant activities as historian, theorist, and music teacher at the Basilica of San Francesco in Bologna, where he wrote in Italian and His monumental Storia della musica, the first history of music to be written in Italian and published in Italy, has been praised by some of the most eminent figures of the period. The works on this album relate to little-known episodes in Martini's life and demonstrate that he was also a highly respected composer.
