Description:
Dameron himself did not consider himself a prominent soloist. Listening to his playing as a band pianist reveals a restrained, contemplative style in which he consistently makes use of chord voicings rather than attempting improvisational variations on melodies. He began his career as a freelancer, providing compositions for the orchestras of Harlan Leonard, Jimmy Lansford, Billy Eckstine, and Dizzy Gillespie, among others. Although he acknowledged that Duke Ellington and George Gershwin had the greatest influence on his music, Gillespie also played a long and important role as a source of harmonic inspiration. His participation in the experimental jam sessions that were flourishing at Minton’s and Monroe’s, as well as his subsequent work with small ensembles, stemmed not only from artistic necessity but also from financial necessity. It is worth noting that, from his perspective as a bandleader and arranger, he adopted a lineup that added one or two horn instruments to the traditional quintet (five-piece ensemble) whenever possible in order to expand the possibilities of harmony.
