German composer Reger (1873-1916), known for his many outstanding organ works, will commemorate the 100th anniversary of his death in 2016 with the release of his "Complete Works for Unaccompanied Violin" on the cpo label. Reger's unaccompanied violin works include this Op.42, the sonatas of Op.91 (7 in all), and the "Preludes and Fugues" of Op.117 (8 in all) and Op.131a (6 in all), which cover almost the entire period of his composition. This is proof of Reger's high interest in the violin. This Op.42 was written around 1900, and of course it is a work of skillful counterpoint, but at the same time it also shows a strong respect for J.S. Bach. It is performed by the virtuoso Ulf Wallin, who has already released Reger's Complete Piano and Violin Works and the Violin Concerto. Naxos Japan
