Description:
Weinberg's piano music, a testimony of history created during the most critical period of Weinberg's life, MDG also took on the challenge of recording Weinberg's works, which have been increasing in recent years. This is also the first challenge for mid-career German Stefan Irmer, who has shown a high standard of performance in this unique repertoire. Weinberg escaped from the Nazis, but was imprisoned for a crime he did not commit and even sentenced to death because of Stalin's Jewish extermination in the early 1950s. Although he miraculously survived Stalin's sudden death, there is no doubt that his outlook on life changed before and after his imprisonment. This album is a collection of piano pieces from 1951, before his arrest, and 1945-6, after his liberation. The Sonatina from 1951 was dedicated to Shostakovich and is attractive for its technical and content clarity. The Partita immediately after his release was dedicated to his benefactor Avtomiyan, who was instrumental in his release, and was not published during his lifetime. The mental anguish he experienced is sonified.Sonata No. 4, one of Weinberg's most popular piano pieces, has been a favorite of Avdeyeva in recent years, but Ilmar also gives an enthusiastic performance, and the more complex No. 5 shows a depth reminiscent of even Bach.
