The musician who appears in *Don Giovanni*, Giuseppe Sarti! A rare album featuring two world-premiere recordings by Giuseppe Sarti (1729–1802), a composer best known today as one of the musicians in Mozart’s *Don Giovanni*. Recorded live in June 2011 at the Mariinsky Concert Hall in St. Petersburg. Sarti was highly regarded by his contemporaries, who described him as “one of the musicians who fully understood the secrets of art” and “one of the most erudite composers of his time.” As a testament to his importance, he was invited to the Russian capital, where he not only represented the Italian style that was in vogue at the time but also incorporated local elements into his works. Sarti’s sacred music masterfully blends highly sophisticated contrapuntal techniques with the dramatic effects of opera, rich and expressive orchestration, and brilliant melodies; it also achieved great success by incorporating the unique a cappella traditions of the Russian Orthodox Church into his own style.
