Attilio Ariosti (1666-1729), one of the most famous Italian composers of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, was as famous as Handel and Bononcini in London as a major opera composer, and was trusted by Emperor Joseph I in Vienna. Ariosti was himself a viola d'amore player and left many excellent works for this instrument. His "Stockholm Sonata" was discovered in Stockholm from a manuscript transcription by the composer Johan Helmig Luhmann, who is also known as the Swedish Handel. This collection of sonatas, which demonstrates Ariosti's excellent compositional technique, is kept in the library of the Royal Swedish Academy in Stockholm. Giorgia Veneziano, viola d'amore, is a musician born in Messina and studied at the Corelli Conservatory there.
