Osmo Vänskä Tackles Yun Isang's Work! Osmo Vänskä has taken on a Yun Isang work. This is an interesting collaboration with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, of which Vänskä has been the music director since 2020. Yun Isang (1917-1995) is unusually well recorded as a contemporary composer, but his orchestral works have been performed only by German and other foreign groups. He was kidnapped and deported by the KCIA in 1967 on charges of espionage and sentenced to death; he was released in 1969 with a special pardon, but was deported and never again set foot in his native land. Today, he is considered one of Korea's greatest composers, and the appearance of this session recording with a Seoul Philharmonic orchestra is a landmark, even a historic accomplishment. The three pieces recorded here are all late works, and "Silla" (1992) is the last orchestral piece. Vänskä's somewhat oriental serenity and transparency are perfectly suited to Yoon-I-Sang's works, and even remind one of Sibelius. The Violin Concerto No. 3 from the same year is notable for its solo performance by the young Soo-ye Park, who was born in 2000. This is also her first concerto recording, and it is amazing to see her show remarkable maturity and intense temperament. King International
