Description:

A collection of works for violin and piano by Greek composers and composers with Greek roots! This album was created to present works for violin and piano by Greek composers and composers with Greek roots. Boris Papandopoulo (1906-1991) was a Croatian composer of Greek descent born in Honnef am Rhein, Germany, near Bonn. He studied at the Zagreb Music Academy and also worked as a conductor. His Sonata for Violin and Piano has the flavor of Balkan folk music, while Meditation is a melancholy piece composed in Tribuni, a picturesque village on the Dalmatian coast facing the Adriatic Sea. Dios Constantinides (1929-2021) was born in Ioannina, northern Greece. He studied violin with Ivan Galamian and Dorothy Delay and others in New York, and composition with Yannis Papaioannou in Athens and Owen Reed in Michigan. The Sonata for Violin and Piano is a three-movement work written in "strict twelve-tone technique" and characterized by "long sweeping melodies." Dimitry Terzakis (1938-), born in Athens, studied with Yannis Papaioannou in Athens and Bernd Alois Zimmermann at the Cologne Music Academy.Later, he left the dogma of "Darmstadt" and began to compose with an emphasis on "melody" rather than tone. The "Inferno Sonata" is a three-movement work inspired by Dante's "Divine Comedy. Shortly after, he composed "Words in the Wind," a collection of short melodic aphorisms that relate to the world of sound and emotion. Yannis Constantinidis (1903-1984) was born in Smyrna (now Izmir), Anatolia. He moved to Athens just before the Greco-Turkish War, studied composition and theory with Paul Juon in Berlin, and earned his living as a pianist in cabaret and theater. Upon his return to Greece, he became a versatile musician under the alias Kostas Yannidis and achieved great success in the field of transcription. His "Suite of Greek Folk Songs of the Dodecanese Islands" is a collection of "authentic" songs and dances based on "Greek Folk Songs of the Dodecanese Islands" by the Swiss folk music scholar Samuel Beau-Bovy. Danae Papamatteou-Mathouke is one of the young generation of Greek violinists with a promising future. She was born in Athens. She studied with Igor Ozim at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Tanya Becker-Bender at the Hamburg University of Music and Drama, and received her doctorate from the Macedonian University of Thessaloniki. Pianist Uwe Machuke was born in Berlin. He studied with Juliane Lerche at the Franz Liszt Weimar Music University and with Peter Schoimosz and others at the Liszt Ferenc University of Music in Budapest. He moved to Athens and in 2001 was appointed professor of piano at the Faculty of Music of the University of Macedonia. King International
