Alec Frank-Gemill, a horn player garnering much attention, takes on Brahms’s chamber music on this album. Alec Frank-Gemell is a rising star who currently serves as principal horn of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Although the horn is an instrument that demands a high level of technical skill, Frank-Gemell captivates listeners with his truly eloquent playing, backed by a technique that borders on perfection. His discography includes *A Noble and Melancholic Instrument* (BISSA2228) on the BIS label, a collection of works by 19th-century composers, *Early Horn Concertos: Before W.A. Mozart* (BISSA2315), featuring works by Ferster, Telemann, Neruda, Leopold Mozart, and five horn concertos by Haydn. In this Brahms recording, the instrument itself is also worth noting. For the performance of the Horn Trio, a natural horn from the composer’s era—a Low-Lubbay (made 1871–76)—was used. This renowned instrument was originally crafted in France as a natural horn but was later imported to London, where a detachable valve block was added. The instrument is currently owned by the Brain family, and for this recording, it was used with the permission of Dennis Brain’s niece, Tina, and the Royal Academy of Music.
