SACD hybrid disc. Boris Tishchenko (1939–2010) was a composer from the former Soviet Union. A student of Shostakovich, he was also the person who introduced Solomon Volkov—author of *Shostakovich’s Testimony*—to his teacher (though Tishchenko himself co-authored a denunciation of the book as a forgery). He was also a master pianist and composed 11 piano sonatas during his lifetime; his Seventh Sonata, composed in 1982, is an unprecedented masterpiece that not only has a playing time of 40 minutes but also features bells playing a prominent role, almost like a solo instrument. When a Melodia recording featuring the composer performing his own work was released immediately after its premiere, it became a talking point in some circles. In any case, I’d never heard music like this before—it’s incredibly fascinating. In stark contrast, his Eighth Piano Sonata, composed in 1986, is a powerful work of about 30 minutes written in a conventional style. The second movement, a set of variations, contains a meaningful quotation from his mentor Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 4. The renowned French pianist Nicolas Stavie studied under Dominique Merlet and later received guidance from Brendel and Shevach. A highly accomplished pianist, he won a special prize at the 2000 Chopin Competition—won by Yundi Li—and took second place at the 2001 Geneva International Music Competition.
