A strange sense of fulfillment. Dausgaard takes on Brahms' symphonies on this SACD hybrid disc. Dausgaard and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, whose output is always impressive, finally took on the Brahms symphonies. It is not unusual for small orchestras to perform Brahms' symphonies, but Dausgaard is not just concerned with the clarity of vision and athleticism. Of course, the tone is clean and free of Brahms's characteristic smokiness, but the music-making is big and moving, including the surprisingly profound first movement and finale. The coupling is Brahms' own orchestration (without voices) of nine pieces from his famous "Love Songs," which are famous as piano pieces with voices. Since there are surprisingly few recordings of these pieces, they are very welcome. Also of note are three pieces from the popular orchestral "Hungarian Dances," also orchestrated by Brahms himself.This album is full of royalty but also full of commitment. King International
