Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy

Description:

The third release from the prestigious Dutch military band is from the U.S.A.! Rhapsody in Blue" played by Gershwin himself! This is the third Channel Classics release by the prestigious military band of the Royal Netherlands Navy, established in 1945. Following the first release "Russia" (PCCS40818) and the second release "Germany & Austria" (PCCS42019), which created a sensation with its excellent program and overwhelming performance, the highly-anticipated third release will be performed on the theme of "America! Godspeed! (b.1957), to the most famous American composers such as Barber, Copland, Ives, Gershwin, etc., the brass band works reflecting various American cultures such as folk music, hymns, jazz, blues, marches, military music, etc. will be performed at the highest level. The program will feature the finest performances of these works. The featured piece, "Rhapsody in Blue," features a piano roll played by Gershwin himself.Jan Baumann, former horn player with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and now a pianola (automatic piano) specialist and pianola operator, has removed only the accompaniment parts from Gershwin's own piano roll, which was left as a two-piano version, and performed it in its original 1924 premiere in The original jazz band composition was first performed in 1924. A similar attempt is known on the Michael Tilson Thomas disc recorded in 1976, but on this album, Jan Baumann optimally manipulates the timing, tempo setting, dynamics, etc. of the movement using a pianola that is set up on the actual piano keyboard to maximize Gershwin's free and jazzy interpretation, reproduced by a modern band with the utmost respect.
