Eclipse" is a series on unjustly forgotten composers by Matthias Spey (1997-), a young pianist who studied under Darfydt Kuijken and Ralf van Raat, and who says he wants to "bring hidden treasures in the history of music into the spotlight. The first volume is dedicated to Joseph Wölffl (1773-1812), a contemporary and rival of Beethoven. He introduces Wölffl as "one of the most underrated composers of Beethoven's time" and "his musical language, while rooted in classicism, clearly shows early romanticism and is reminiscent of Schubert's music and sometimes even of Mendelssohn and Schumann. . The opening piece is a colorful C minor sonata that opens with a fugue that lasts several minutes. The Andante and Variations are a testament to the richness of Wölfle's musical imagination.
