Saxophonist Aura Asdal Rokknes (1983-) lives in Tromsø, northern Norway, and works in both jazz and classical music. The Norwegian Saxophone is his first recording of classical repertoire. It features works composed and dedicated to him by three Norwegian composers of different generations. Mattin Romberg (1978-) has composed many works inspired by myths and legends, as exemplified by his symphonic poems based on J.R.R. Tolkien's stories and the Indian epic "Ramayana". The Tale of Taliesin" is a "tone poem" for alto saxophone and strings based on the Welsh poet Taliesin, and uses "Welsh" rhythms and harmonies throughout. Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Strings" by Torstein Ågård-Nilsen (1964-) is a piece with the Norwegian word "Bor," which can be translated as "burden," "rain," or the verb "...should," depending on context.Shel Habbestad's (1955-) "Norwegian Dream" is based on the concept of the ballad "Draumkvedet" (Dream Poem) from Norwegian folklore. This ballad, which was also used as a subject by Nurheim and other composers, is blended with elements of folk songs and contemporary classical music. The ballad is composed in the late romanticism style of "Insomnium (Dream)," "Beatitudo (Blessing)," in which the saxophone soloist and the orchestra become one, and "Visio ( The film depicts the dream of the protagonist, Olav Osteson. The St. Petersburg Northern Sinfonia, founded by Fabio Mastrangelo in the spring of 2016, performs with the St. Petersburg Northern Sinfonia.
