JOEL CUSUMANO has been a staple of the San Francisco Bay Area indie rock scene with his sharp guitar and melody-oriented songwriting, and has worked as a songwriter and guitarist for Bay Area bands such as SOB STORIES, R.E. SERAPHIN, and BODY DOUBLE. He has been active as a songwriter and guitarist in Bay Area bands such as SOB STORIES, R.E. SERAPHIN and BODY DOUBLE, and is a key figure in California's underground power pop scene. JOEL CUSUMANO, who says he began writing the group of songs on this disc after a period spent in a psychiatric hospital for treatment of a long-standing and severe obsessive-compulsive disorder, says, "It was dark days. For a year I could barely function." He recalls the feeling at the time, and reveals that he looked for a new expression away from the angry young heartbreak songs that he had continued to write in SOB STORIES. This was combined with the painful breakup at the end of the composition, and the songs were lined with a perspective that intersected Bay Area realities and personal anxieties, carving out a sense of alienation and discomfort in an ever-changing world. The slack-rock power and twisted chords of "CAESAR" coexist; "ANOTHER TIME, ANOTHER PLACE" pushes sadness with a straightforward power-pop hook; "PUSH PUSH" plays guitar and chorus with the lightness of bubblegum pop; and "DEATH-WAX GIRL" has a post-punk-leaning bass and beat that create an unsettling uplifting atmosphere, The post-punk-leaning bass and beat of "DEATH-WAX GIRL" create an unsettling uplift, and the composition naturally moves between multiple streams of guitar pop in one piece. The opening track "Two Arrows" and the middle track "Marry Kathearine" simultaneously bring up the pop sensibility of the Bay City Rollers and the roughness of 90's US indie, leaving the listener with the feeling of being trapped in the chaotic atmosphere of the San Francisco Bay Area. The humor and heartbreak of the Bay Area's underground indie rock are both captured in this light power-pop release.
