Description:

York Bowen & Rebecca Clark Included in the program York Bowen(1884-1961):Viola Sonata No.1 in C minor, Op.18(1905) Rebecca Clark(1886-1979):Viola Sonata(1919) 52'25 Performers Hannah Hochty(Viola) Anna Kvaya (Piano) [instrument Piano: Pleyer, 1874]. This is the first duo album by Finnish viola player Hanna Hochti and pianist Anna Kvaja. We wanted to perform sonatas written in the early 20th century by Rebecca Clarke and York Bowen, two British composers of the same generation, on "original instruments". The album was born out of this desire. Bowen's "Viola Sonata No. 1 in C minor" was written when he was 20 years old. It is written in three movements, "Allegro moderato," "Poco lento e cantabile," and "Finale," with unexpected developments, harmonic diction, and unique expressive techniques. It is written in three movements, "Allegro moderato," "Poco lento e cantabile," and "Finale. It was premiered by the duo of Lionel Tardis and Bowen. Clarke's "Sonata," which she entered in a composition competition organized by Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, a neighbor of hers who had emigrated to the U.S., and was awarded first prize along with Bloch's work, was premiered at the Berkshire Music Festival in 1919 to great acclaim. The first movement of the "Impetuoso" has a style reminiscent of Debussy and Vaughan Williams, both of whom were strong influences on her. The second movement of the "Vivace," the "Adagio," and the third movement of the "Allegro," which uses the full range of the viola. Clark's sonata has become a favorite of viola players and was also performed by Timothy Ridout on his album "Dedicated to Lionel Tartis" ( HMM 90537). Hanna Hohoti is a graduate of the Master's program taught by Garfield Jackson at the Royal Academy of Music in London and has been active on the chamber music scene in the Tapiola district of the Helsinki metropolitan area since 2017. He has been deeply involved in chamber music performance on period instruments with Anna Kvaja and in electro=acoustic music. On this album, he plays on a viola with gut strings. Anna Kvaya (1979-) is a soloist, chamber and orchestral pianist, and fortepiano player whose repertoire ranges from classical to contemporary music of all periods. His solo album "Living on the River" (ABCD 386) and the duo album with clarinet "Soiree Stücke" (ABCD 513) have been released on Alba Records to good reviews. On this album, he plays an 1874 Pleyel piano. (King International)
