Formed in Dunedin, on New Zealand’s South Island, around frontman Graeme Downes, The Verlaines are an indie rock group emblematic of the Flying Nuns label. Drawing on a background in classical music, they construct intricate chord progressions and dramatic ensembles, remaining a unique unit that continues to showcase musical intelligence that transcends the boundaries of the “Dunedin Sound.” Released in 1991 as their fourth studio album, this record was released to a wider audience after the band relocated their base of operations to Slash Records in Los Angeles. Recorded in a Sydney studio, this album is renowned as their masterpiece, featuring the band’s most powerful guitar-pop songs to date, and represents a perfect balance between sophisticated production and raw, early-era energy. The 12 tracks flow together like a single narrative, featuring "READY TO FLY," where rich orchestration paints a grand scene; "GLOOM JUNKY," whose fresh, racing energy stirs the soul; and "WAR IN MY HEAD," where sharp riffs collide. The soundscape, woven from intricately crafted melodies and a dynamic ensemble, eloquently speaks to the maturity of New Zealand indie music.
