Black Art Jazz Collective

Description:

The "Black Art Jazz Collective", a popular 3-tube band featuring Wayne Escoffery (ts) and Jeremy Pelt (tp), has updated their rhythm section for their new album, a tribute to the great pianists Harold Mayburn and Larry Willis, who passed away in 2019! This is a super heavy hard bop album with tribute songs to the great pianists Harold Mayburn and Larry Willis, who will pass away in 2019! The "Black Art Jazz Collective" was formed based on the concept that the members, who are African American, are proud of their roots and want to pass on their culture, identity, and spirit to the future. The group's performance, which inherits the traditional hard bop style, is filled with spiritual power and overwhelms the listener. The group was formed in 2013 by Jonathan Blake (ds), Wayne Escoffery (ts), and Jeremy Pelt (tp), but for this album, the rhythm section has been updated with the departure of Jonathan Blake and others.Victor Gould (p), who has been popular in Japan with Branford Marsalis and Nicholas Payton among others, Rashaan Carter on bass, and Mark Whitfield Jr, son of jazz guitarist Mark Whitfield, are new on drums. This latest recording was made in January 2020 at Rudy Van Gelder Studios in New Jersey, and features two songs, "Iron Man" and "Mr. Willis," dedicated to the great pianists Harold Mayburn and Larry Willis, who passed away in succession in the fall of 2019. Other highlights include "Twin Towers" by Jerky McLean and "Tulsa," inspired by the tragedy of the 1921 black massacre. There are also plenty of solos by the front three, and the thick three-wind front ensemble of successful New York musicians is pleasant to listen to. It is a super-heavyweight performance that gives a sense of the orthodox hard bop flow.It was recorded by Maureen Sickler, a female engineer who inherited Rudy Van Gelder's sound, and mastered by Katsuhiko Naito, a successful Japanese engineer living in New York. The heavyweight sound is beautifully captured in this masterful recording.
