Description:

The second album by Peter Somoor, a young trumpet player from Ghana based in the Netherlands, is a mosaic of Ghanaian music and modern jazz traditions, developed with the sense and techniques of current cosmic jazz. Somua's second album is released on ACT. He began playing trumpet at the age of 14 in Accra, the capital of Ghana, and grew up surrounded by West African music, strongly influenced by Roy Hargrove and Miles Davis, among others. His goal is to explore the connection between Ghana and modern jazz with his own music. He spent time in China with friends and toured France, Belgium, and Spain for several years as a member of a band before moving to the Netherlands with a partner. At the Codarts Arts School in Rotterdam, he formed the cosmopolitan 6tet and recorded his debut album, Outer Space, establishing his own sound. The album won an Edison Jazz Award. This album is full of new compositions that reflect the history of Ghana, the work of jazz giants, and the vibrant "Afropian" scene in his new homeland of Benelux. The pulsating, frenetic "Mission On Earth" blends Miles' unmistakable dedication to the "Bitches Brew" period with a sense of the current cosmic jazz movement, led by Kamasi Washington and others, without a trace of discomfort. The song is a perfect example of how tight and organic the interaction between keyboardist/producer Anton de Bruyn and his band is. The track features the carefree 6-8 rhythms of the Ashanti region ("Green Path"), a fusion of jazz with the raucous hula-hula music of northern Ghana ("The Sky"), quotes from High Life, a dance music from the West African coast in the early 20th century, and the appearance of Ghanaian veteran Giedu Bray Amborei ("Rein-carnation"), the album is packed with the colors and characteristics of Ghanaian music.
