Who knew the contrabassoon could sound so melodious! SACD hybrid disc. A rare album featuring the contrabassoon. Simon Van Hollen serves as the contrabassoonist with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, while also performing as a soloist and in chamber music ensembles. Born in Belgium in 1985. He began playing the bassoon at age 8 and studied at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and in Düsseldorf, among other places, under such distinguished masters as Klaus Thunemann, Dag Jensen, Stefan Schweigelt, Sergio Azzilini, and Marion Reinhardt. He showcases the capabilities and charm of the contrabassoon in a variety of ensembles, ranging from unaccompanied pieces to duets with the cello, as well as quartets and quintets for bassoon and strings. All of these are original works brimming with charm. Schulhoff, known for his “decadent music,” composed an unaccompanied sonata and deliberately titled it “The Nightingale.” He also delivers rich, resonant melodies in Classical-era works by Mozart and Kromer. The album title, “Pro Contra,” plays on the dual meanings of “professional contrabassoonist” and “pro and contra” (meaning “for and against”), thereby subverting conventional notions of the contrabassoon.
