Building upon the tightness and diversity of their critically acclaimed debut, The Messthetics and James Brandon Lewis (2024), this new release showcases even greater confidence and fearless boldness across all seven tracks. Only a duo who've shared over 150 stages a year could achieve this masterpiece, brimming with vitality, subtlety, and improvisational brilliance. The Messthetics features the ironclad rhythm section of Joe Lally (b) and Brendan Canty (ds) from Fugazi, the band synonymous with Washington D.C.'s post-hardcore scene, joined by genre-transcending guitarist Anthony Pirog. Anthony had long been friends with James Brandon Lewis, and inviting James as a guest for a live show in 2019 marked the beginning of this project.James' rich, soulful sound resonates with the band's punk spirit, culminating in their debut album for 2024. If their previous work documented the unit's "childhood," this release proves their evolution into a true "band." Joe Lally reflects, "When we made the last album, we hadn't done a single thing that felt like a proper band activity." Regarding this album, created after a year-long extensive tour, James Brandon Lewis states, "The deeper you get to know someone, the richer the relationship becomes. It's like a cast iron skillet. The more you use it, the better the food tastes. What you hear on this album is precisely that matured sound, and the urgency of 'this very moment.'" The album showcases the dynamic interplay born from the quartet's sophisticated communication. "Universal Security" launches from a floating melody over a waltz rhythm into a wall of guitar noise, while "Gestations" layers a bop-like line over a tight funk groove, building to an explosive climax.The latter radiates an energy reminiscent of the fusion of doom metal and avant-garde jazz, evoking Sonny Sherlock's masterpiece 'Ask the Ages,' which they have covered in recent years.
