Eventually, he partnered with Bach’s youngest son, Johann Christian Bach, successfully launching a subscription concert series and even constructing a new concert hall—only to be struck by misfortune when Johann Christian Bach died shortly thereafter. Nevertheless, Abel did not give up; he continued to perform in various locations and eventually achieved success at Salomon’s concerts, demonstrating that he possessed an indomitable spirit that would not be defeated by adversity. ◆ A Short Piece Strikingly Similar to “In This Holy Temple” Mozart stayed in London for a full year and three months starting in April 1764, during which time he associated with both Johann Christian Bach and Abel. It is well known that he copied and studied Abel’s symphonies, which led to their publication as Mozart’s Symphony No. 3 after his death; however, it is less well known that Abel’s works included a piece that bears a striking resemblance to an aria from *Sarastro* written by Mozart in his later years. Since *The Magic Flute* also incorporated themes from Clementi’s sonatas, Mozart may have been seeking to create a pastiche-like effect.
