This duo album features an original and captivating program performed by violinist Sophie Rosa—who is based in the UK and serves as concertmaster of Sinfonia Viva—and pianist Ian Buckle, who boasts a diverse career. The album features the “First Violin Sonata (No. 1)” by three German Romantic composers who lived during the same era. Of particular note is Friedrich Gernsheim (1839–1916), a composer who was almost entirely erased from music history by the Nazis. Born in Worms in 1839, Gernsheim studied under a pupil of Spohr, earned praise from Moscheles and Bruch, and held an important position in German musical and academic circles. While he composed chamber music and numerous concertos, his central achievement was his four symphonies, the first of which was completed several years before Brahms’s First Symphony. Gernsheim maintained a close friendship with Brahms throughout his life, and the two held each other’s music in high regard. His compositional style also bears strong traces of Brahms’s influence and a shared aesthetic; one can hear this musical resonance in the Violin Sonata included alongside this work. Alongside masterpieces by Schumann and Brahms, this album is a treasure trove of discoveries, unearthing Gernsheim’s masterpieces that have been buried in history. Rosa performs on a 1795 “Joseph Galliano” violin on loan from the Stradivari Trust, breathing new life into these masterpieces with her masterful technique and profound expressiveness. Tokyo M Plus
