Woodwinds that seem to sob, the sensual sounds of tango that blend together A collection of works by Thomas Adès, performed by the composer himself, including world premiere recordings Thomas Adès is one of Britain’s leading composers, conductors, and pianists. The London Philharmonic Orchestra has collaborated with Adès on an ongoing basis since welcoming him as “Composer-in-Focus” during the 2000–01 season. All works on this album are conducted by Adès himself, and the recordings are live performances from their UK premieres. The “Luxury Suite” from *Powder Her Face* is an orchestral suite adapted from the opera of the same name and was commissioned by six arts organizations, including the LPO. Premiered by the Berlin Philharmonic in 2018, this work centers on an elderly duchess who has been forced to vacate her room in a luxury hotel and recalls her tumultuous romantic history. “Five Spells” from *The Tempest* is an orchestral suite adapted from Adès’s 2003 opera, which is based on Shakespeare’s play *The Tempest*. The *Inferno Suite* is a work inspired by Dante’s *Divine Comedy* and was composed during the 2019–20 season as a joint commission by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Royal Ballet. The work centers on the protagonist’s journey through the fires of Hell. LPO
