Henk de Graaf (Clarinet) Schubert Conte Elizabeth Perry (Violin) Itamar Simon (Violin) Richard Wolff, viola Vladislav Wallenberg (Cello) Recorded May 15, 2023,16, Reformed Church, Lohn, Netherlands Heinrich Behrmann's [1784-1847] father was a musician in the Prussian military band. Behrman also studied clarinet at the military academy in Potsdam, and his skills caught the attention of Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia and he entered the court in 1804. However, two years later, when Napoleon declared war, Behrman went to war as a member of the military band and was taken prisoner for a year, while Louis Ferdinand was killed. After the war's end, Behrman was released and went to Munich by invitation, where he was contracted as principal clarinetist in the court orchestra of King Maximilian I. He was also recognized as a soloist, and many composers, including Weber, Mendelssohn, Danzig, and Meyerbeer, dedicated works to him, and he even gave concerts in Berlin with Weber. Behrman's concerts took him to Vienna, Prague, Paris, London, St. Petersburg, Switzerland, and other parts of Europe, and even after his retirement from the orchestra in 1834, he continued to tour in Paris.Although Behrman is modestly known as a composer, his Clarinet Quintet No. 3 is well known as a standard clarinet chamber music repertoire, and Nos. 1 and 2 are also substantial. The performance is by Henk de Graaf, former solo clarinetist of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Schubert Consort. (NPT)
