He joined the Military Band of the National Guard, which Bernard Sallet had formed in 1789 and increased to 78 members. When Viotti built the Théâtre de Fédéau and the Théâtre de Monsieur, a troupe that performed operas at the Tuileries Palace and other royal residences, hired him as principal clarinetist, a position he held until 1824. During that time, he also served as a professor at the Paris Conservatory for a total of 10 years, from 1800 to 1802 and from 1808 to 1816.His younger brother Frédéric-Nicolas Duvernoy, a hornist and composer, moved to Paris in 1788 to become a hornist in the orchestra of the Italian Comedy Theatre, and in 1790 joined the military band of the National Guard like his brother. In 1795, he became a professor at the newly opened Paris Conservatory, and in 1797, he began working in the orchestra of the Opéra, where he was appointed principal horn player in 1799. This album features the Clarinet Quartet, Clarinet Variations, and Clarinet Aria by his brother Charles and the Clarinet Trio by his brother Frederic. All of the works are straightforward demonstrations of the charm of the clarinet, and the content amply demonstrates that the strong tradition of wind instruments at the Paris Conservatory, which is also linked to the flourishing of wind instruments in modern France, was built up by many outstanding military musicians. The performance is by the Italian Luigi Magistrelli and the Italian Classical Consort, which has a great track record in introducing the clarinet repertoire. (Nippon Shuppan Trade Co.)
