This album features a selection of gems from Brahms' late piano works (Op. 116-119), in an order carefully constructed by Anderszewski himself. The fourth piece in Op. 119 is known as the last piano piece Brahms wrote in his lifetime. Written in 1892-93, these works reflect a more mature, intimate, and quietly lyrical Brahms of his later years, far removed from the passionate romanticism of his youth. Anderszewski's playing is deeply attuned to this inner musical world, giving each note a breath of contemplation. His approach, which eschews extreme emotional expression and ornamentation in favor of listening to the poetry hidden in silence, is like listening directly to the voice of the composer's mind in his later years.
